version 0.20 release (ddj 6 entry)
Another year another update to my CRINGE VIDEOGAME.
Like last time here is a probably non-exhaustive and probably not helpful at all changelog because i didn't learn and still didn't bother writing down what things i added so i am probably forgetting several points:
-2 new effects, one is entirely cosmetic, the other has an actual practical purpose
-gave the Sketch effect a new coat of paint and placed it at a new location
-many new maps and connections (how many new maps, you ask? ...i don't remember.)
-a couple new generic npc types
-a couple new reoccurring Characters
-a couple new events, one in particular is pretty substantial
-expanded a few existing worlds and fixed up dialogue in several places
-i'm bringing myst back into style
-more cats
If you happen to encounter any bugs while playing, please let me know in the comments of this log.
KNOWN ISSUES:
-some of the walls in the green maze can be walked through unintentionally though honestly it being that easy to trivialize adds to the joke of the character in there so i'm keeping it because it's funny
-like i said last time, if you get an error popup when starting the game that says something along the lines of "profile error occurred," just ignore it. it's not important.
-thats it hopefully
While I'm here, I'd also like to talk about my plans for the future of this game.
I actually had a much longer version of what I was going to say here written up but decided it was too much. The basics of what you need to know is that I'm probably going to put this project on hold for a long time. This stopped being the kind of game I wanted to make a long time ago, but I had to keep working on it so it was at least quality enough i could let it stand on its own for a while without always feeling embarrased by its poor shape. now that it's at that level of quality, i need a break.
for next year's dream diary jam, i'll be starting a different game. it's one i've had the idea for since like mid-2020, so i hope i can make it work.
since i won't be definitely updating memorial playground for next year's jam, i can't really guarantee when the next update will happen.
but one thing i know is for sure: the next major update (meaning not just a bugfix/art upgrade one) will be the one where i add in the ending.
the game in it's current form still feels too barebones for me to add the ending...but once i fill out the worlds more, make it so there are less dead ends, maybe add one last effect, i'll implement the ending. it's the one part of the game's plot i've had planned since near the beginning, so hopefully it won't disappoint.
it'll take a while, probably won't happen until late into next year at the very least, but i'll see it through eventually. for now, i just want to work on other games that still resonate with me a lot more.
